Industrial Jobs

The Structural & Thermal-Fluids Engineering Group provides innovative multidisciplinary engineering solutions through the development of advanced mechanical and aerospace technologies for sea, ground, air, and space-based prototype systems for national security applications. Examples include the development of structural-material systems for spaceborne imaging and laser communication terminals, heat exchangers for high-flux laser and RF solid-state devices, and aerodynamic designs and multifunctional materials for UAV platforms. Engineering solutions are developed through the utilization of appropriate technologies coupled with high-fidelity models and multidisciplinary simulations, environmental and performance characterization testing, and the utilization and development of advanced materials to optimize solutions to meet ever-increasing performance, size, weight, and environmental challenges.

The thermal-fluids engineer will be asked to carry out system-level and detailed thermal-fluids design, analysis, and testing on optical and communication systems including supporting electronics. Projects range from platform level analyses to sensor assembly to detailed components.

The candidate should have a strong background in heat transfer and fluid mechanics and be responsible for performing thermal-fluid modeling and simulations to ensure performance requirements are met including the use of CFD. The engineer will support decision making in the system architecture and thermal-fluids management, evaluate/select/procure thermal-fluids hardware, and participate in the preparation and performance of developmental and qualification testing.

Experience with heat exchangers, plumbing, cold plates, cryo-coolers, heaters, radiators, insulation, chillers, and broad knowledge of materials is desirable. Thermal environments include various orbits in space, aircraft flight profiles, missile trajectories, ground operations, and underwater environments.

A thermal engineer shall have a strong background and experience using thermal-fluids analysis and CAD software with experience using CFD modeling tools preferably Fluent.
